Talking to Your Ideal Audience Effectively on Social Media
You can't talk to everyone via social media, and you don't want to. If you try to talk to everyone, you'll end up making shallow connections which is just wasted effort. Here are a few tips on how to use your words effectively on social media.
1. I know you've heard this a million times, but you MUST MUST MUST know who your audience is. If you have no idea who is reading your content, it will be vague and not very helpful. Also, knowing just the demographic is only going to get you so far. Find what out makes them tick, laugh, cry. Are they a morning person? Do they even like brunch? (Yes, they like brunch. Everyone likes brunch. ;)) Not only ask yourself who you serve but why do they care. Not only think about what they like to read online but what they like to share.
2. Speak to your audience directly. This isn't the time to be vague or to talk in the third person. You are your brand. When you talk in the third person it distances you from your audience. It's hard for the reader to feel connected when there is a narrator between you and them. Your audience needs to get to know the real you. Share with them your thoughts, opinions or feelings. To get in that headspace, pretend you're on a coffee date.
3. Communicate in a way that makes your audience feel understood. You started your business because you saw a problem in the market that you could solve. Your audience wants you to solve their problems and improve their lives. Understanding their needs creates connection and loyalty. Use words that convey feeling, use humor, be compassionate, and show some empathy.
