The Instagram Goals You Should Be Setting

Goal setting gives you a vision to work toward, helps you organize your time and resources, allows you to measure progress, can help overcome procrastination, and they are super motivating. I love a good goal. I love taking small actionable steps to get there, and isn’t it the best feeling ever when you’ve accomplished that goal?

Sometimes it can feel like we’re flailing in the wind when it comes to posting on Instagram, especially when we are feeling discouraged about the algorithm changes. We can often be left wondering what the point is. While we can’t do anything about how Instagram chooses to throttle our posts, we choose to set some goals that allow us not to focus on the numbers but rather the things that will really benefit our brand.     

The Goals

Increase Brand Awareness- You can increase brand awareness by collaborating, doing share for shares- which I’ve been seeing a lot in Stories, using relevant hashtags, hosting giveaways, asking your audience to tag their friends, and tagging your location.

Consistency- Throw frequency out of your mind and think more about being consistent. If you only want to post a three times a week, that’s ok just make sure you are consistently posting three times a week. Let’s say you just had a photo shoot and you now have a ton of great photos. Spread that content out! Don’t go posting twice a day for two weeks then go, ‘oops I’ve got nothing left’ and drop off everyone’s radar. Your branding and also needs to have a consistent look and feel.

Show Your Authentic Self- This one will take some practice, and as you and your business evolves, so does this. None of us has our shit together so do not be afraid to show the nitty gritty. I promise your audience will appreciate you for it.

Building a Community- ENGAGE. Find your audience and engage. Find people you may want to collaborate with and engage. Respond to every real comment you get, respond to DMs, share photos your customers take with products, and respond to people’s stories. Don’t get caught up in making your followers grow, but spend time nurturing the relationships you do have.

Driving Traffic to your Site- I am a firm believer that your website is far more valuable than your Instagram. You own your site, you don’t own your profile. Use calls to action, and if you’re product based, you can make your Instagram shoppable. If you are using branded quote boxes, make sure they include you web address. If you have over 10K, you can use the Stories ‘Swipe Up’ or ‘See More’ features or just simply hop on and tell them there is something exciting going on at the link in your bio.

Use Instagram as a Tool to Listen to Your Audience- Wondering if your audience prefers one thing over the other, or maybe you’re curious about what their favorite lunch spot is. Well the best way to find out and to find out quickly is to ask! The poll feature on Instagram is a life saver especially for those of us that tend to be a little shy.
